President's Report

Happy November Members.

It is with great sadness and heavy heart that I share with you the passing of our recent past President Matt Short. A lot of us knew Matt for his vibrant personality and astounding work ethics. We are all heart-broken. He is survived by his wife Kristine and their three boys. Please remember to keep his family in your prayers. His impact and contribution to our ASHRAE chapter will never be forgotten. Our BOG/Leadership team is discussing ways to honor his service and contribution to our chapter.

Our November virtual meeting was very successful with attendance over 270 members which is a record for our chapter. We want to thank our speaker Dan Rellihan for a great presentation on Ionization Technology and COVID-19.

Our RP Chair and committee have been extremely busy planning our fall golf tournament. This year's golf tournament will be hosted at the Cowboys Golf Club on Thursday November 12th. I encourage you to reach out to Henry Homes regarding sponsorship opportunities. This is an event you do not want to miss so dust off your clubs and enjoy a great round of golf with fellow ASHRAE members.

As always, let me know if there is anything I can do to make your ASHRAE experience a better one.

Stay well, stay blessed.

Ermias Lamesgin
2020-2021 ASHRAE Dallas Chapter President

Note from the President-Elect/CTTC Chair

A huge thank you to Dan Rellihan with PlasmaAir for his presentation last month of Ionization Technology and COVID-19.  We had over 270 participants on the call! That is the largest ever lunch meeting we have had in the Dallas Chapter! I hope everyone looks forward to our presentation this month! We have Distinguished Lecturer Brian Monk with Carrier presenting on IAQ and Cognitive Functioning in High Performing Buildings.  If you have not caught on we are sticking to an IAQ theme through 2020 to help highlight the importance we all play in every building we design and walk into. Please feel free to reach out to me if you are interested in a certain topic or want to present on something in 2021!  Spots are filling up so do not hesitate to send me an email at [email protected].  I look forward to seeing everyone virtually on November 11th and hopefully in person at our annual Fall Golf Outing on November 12th.

Eric Borders,
President-Elect and CTTC Chair

YEA & Student Activities

Good News Alert!

1st ASHRAE Dallas classroom presentation this year at UNT Dallas was a GREAT success! Fully Virtual and 100% Engagement with 60+ students in Professor Nasrazadani's Heat Transfer class. Huge appreciation to Henry Holmes for volunteering countless hours and effort creating such a wonderful presentation. I'm glad to be a part of this effort to bring values to the students in need during this tough time.

Feeling FOMO? DM me to volunteer to speak with students at UNT and UTD.

P/S: Look forward to the next presentation at UTD next month!

Government Affairs Committee Update

It was great to see some of you at the ASHRAE YEA event at Katy Trail Ice House! Uponor was happy to sponsor such a fun event. We hope that everyone has stayed safe and got out there to vote. As we move into late fall with the pandemic still in full swing, we wanted to share engineering design and operational procedures for the reopening of schools and universities as it relates to COVID-19 published by the ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force (ETF). The ETF covers many topics, including: general recommendations, HVAC system startup checklists, design guidelines, filtration guidelines, and facility operations strategies. Additionally, the CDC provides guidance and considerations for schools and universities. This information can be accessed in the link provided below.

ASHRAE’s position is that “Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 through the air is sufficiently likely that airborne exposure to the virus should be controlled. Changes to building operations, including the operation of heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning [HVAC] systems, can reduce airborne exposures.” While all retrofits and modifications must not contradict ASHRAE 62.1 guidelines and must continue to meet or exceed the standards and codes adopted by local jurisdictions, the engineering community must work closely with the local school system to develop new operational protocols for facility operations.

If you are designing, commissioning, retro-commissioning, or developing operational protocols for a school or university, take a moment to review the information provided by the ASHRAE ETF for the Reopening of Schools and Universities here:

If you have any questions, comments, thoughts, or opinions feel free to reach out to me. I hope everyone stays healthy and happy!

Refrigeration Update

As Refrigeration Chair, I have made contact with a popular brewery in McKinney for a spring tour of their refrigeration and “net zero energy” location. It should make for a great tour and we plan to pair it with the YEA happy hour at the end of a business day! As long as Covid gets more under control in about half a year, we should have a wonderful event.
